Spa Marketing Lab is an independent site for people who own a massage practice, a day spa or a small wellness studio and want a fuller book without signing a contract on a promise.
Who writes it
Steve Meitler is the editor. He has spent years running growth campaigns for local service businesses, massage and spa businesses among them, and has watched enough owners get sold six-month agreements with no reporting attached to want a site that hands over the method instead. Everything here is written so an owner can execute it alone on a Sunday afternoon.
Where the benchmark numbers come from
The benchmark report is built from public Google Business Profile listings. We run Google Maps searches for massage therapists, massage spas and day spas in every US state, keep the public fields on each listing (review count, star rating, whether a website is linked, hours, primary category, location), remove duplicates by Google place ID, and compute the statistics. Nothing comes from behind a login. No client names, reviewer names or personal details are stored, which matters more in this industry than most, since a spa's client list is sensitive by nature.
The dataset currently holds 70,932 listings across 51 states and is refreshed monthly. At that scale, collection errors are unavoidable. Treat every figure as accurate to a point or two, not to the decimal. The category mix matters too: the listings include solo therapists, multi-room spas, wellness centers and some chiropractic practices carrying massage as a primary category, so the low end of the distribution is heavy with one-person practices.
Editorial rules
- No pay-to-play. No booking platform, software vendor or franchise can buy a mention, a ranking or a kind word here.
- Every number is sourced, either to our own dataset or to a primary source such as Google's or Meta's published policies. Opinions are labeled as opinions.
- Guides have to be doable by an owner who is on the table five days a week. If a step cannot be done in an hour between clients or handed to a front desk person, it does not go in.
- We date every guide and update it when a platform changes its rules, which in this industry happens often.
How the free trial works
The site is funded by the marketing work we do for massage and spa businesses. Every service is offered as a free 14-day trial because an owner should watch the calendar fill before paying anyone. You text or call, say what you want to try (Google Ads, Instagram and Facebook ads, AI search visibility, local SEO and Google profile work, a website, social media, review generation, missed-call text-back, email and SMS for rebooking, bookkeeping, or appointment setting), and we set it up inside your own accounts, usually within 48 hours. It runs 14 days. No card is taken and nothing renews. At the end you keep it at a price quoted before the trial starts, switch to a different service, or walk.
